How to Push Start a Motorcycle

 Requirements:

  • A manual transmission motorcycle

  • A slight incline or a friend to help push (optional but helpful)

  • A battery that’s low but not completely dead (the ignition and fuel system must still work)

 Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn the Key On

  • Make sure the ignition is ON.

  • Ensure the kill switch is set to "Run".

  • If your bike has a fuel valve, open it.

2. Put the Bike in 2nd Gear

  • Second gear is preferred—it reduces wheel lock-up compared to 1st gear.

3. Pull in the Clutch

  • Hold the clutch in all the way.

4. Start Pushing

  • Begin pushing the motorcycle manually or with help. Aim for at least 5–10 mph (8–16 km/h).

  • If you’re on a hill, let gravity help.

5. Pop the Clutch

  • Once you’ve got enough speed, quickly release the clutch while giving a slight twist of the throttle.

  • The engine should turn over and start.

6. Pull the Clutch In Again

  • As soon as the engine starts, pull the clutch back in to prevent stalling.

7. Keep It Running

  • Rev the engine slightly and keep it running to recharge the battery.
