What You Need:
-
Jumper cables
-
A 12V power source, such as:
-
Another motorcycle with a good battery
-
A car (engine off!)
-
A portable jump starter
-
Safety Tips:
-
Make sure both vehicles are off before connecting the cables.
-
Never start a car engine while jump starting a motorcycle—it could overload the motorcycle’s system.
-
Ensure the jumper cables don’t touch each other once connected.
How to Jump Start a Motorcycle:
Step 1: Locate the Batteries
-
Find the battery on your motorcycle (often under the seat).
-
Do the same on the donor vehicle or jump starter.
Step 2: Connect the Jumper Cables
-
Red to Dead: Connect red (+) clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
-
Red to Donor: Connect the other red (+) clamp to the positive terminal of the good battery.
-
Black to Donor: Connect black (–) clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery.
-
Black to Frame: Connect the other black (–) clamp to a metal part of your motorcycle’s frame, away from the battery and fuel system (acts as a ground).
Step 3: Start the Motorcycle
-
Wait a few seconds, then try to start the motorcycle.
-
If it doesn't start after a few tries, wait a minute or two before trying again.
Step 4: Disconnect the Cables (in reverse order)
-
Black clamp from motorcycle frame
-
Black clamp from donor battery
-
Red clamp from donor battery
-
Red clamp from motorcycle battery
Step 5: Keep It Running
-
Let the motorcycle idle for at least 15–20 minutes or take a short ride to help recharge the battery.
Alternative: Push Start (for manual bikes)
If you don’t have jumper cables:
-
Turn on ignition and put the bike in 2nd gear.
-
Hold in the clutch and push or roll downhill until you reach 5–10 mph (8–16 km/h).
-
Quickly release the clutch while giving the throttle a twist.
-
The engine should crank and start.
